Dillinger heavy plate for the
aircraft service hangar at Frankfurt/Main Airport
A building of superlatives – German Steel Construction Award 2010
At the site of the Frankfurt/Main Airport, a new service hall has been erected for the world’s newest and largest passenger airliner, the giant Airbus A380 and its impressive body (a length of 73 meters, a wingspan of 80 meters and a height of 24 meters). The gigantic dimensions of the building (350 m long, 140 m wide and 45 m high) make it the largest maintenance hangar for wide-bodied aircrafts in Europe. Once complete, by 2015, it will provide enough room to accommodate four Airbus A380s or six Boeing 747.
Its particularity: The main support structure lies outside
In order to ensure that the aircrafts are not hampered by columns when maneuvering, the hall has been built without inner columns.
The exterior roof structure consists of two parallel longitudinal,
15 meter high, main lattice girders with 170 and 180 meter spans as well as nine transversal secondary girders with 48 meter spans. In combination with the four main supporting columns, which are also outside, the support structure covers the surface area of the column-free hall. Purlins are connected to the bottom flange of the secondary girders and support the roof cladding of light metal deck plate (3,000 t). The inner ceiling has a height of 30 m.
For the construction of this particular roof structure Dillinger Hütte supplied nearly 1,100 t of heavy plate in grade S460ML in thicknesses of 50 to 120 mm.
