Dillinger heavy plate for the
bow string bridge Raymond Barre in Lyon
Functional…
Connecting the two flourishing city areas of La Confluence and Gerland, the white steel arc bridge over the Rhône is reserved entirely for “soft”, environmentally friendly modes of transportation (tram, bicycles, pedestrians). Named after the former French Prime Minister and mayor of Lyon, Raymond Barre, it was inaugurated on 19th February 2014 on the occasion of the opening of the extended tram line 1. It hosts tramway tracks, a two-way cycle path, a wide pavement as well as a large resting area and a viewing point.
… and aesthetically appealing
The 260 m long, 17.5 m wide and 3,400 t bridge is characterized by its asymmetric structure. Its two long elongated arches (150 m) are inclined towards the outside, 10° to the vertical. Its central section, with its impressing dimensions (170 m long, 17 m high, 2,500 t), inclines obliquely to the Rhône axis. This particular aesthetic detail makes it a refined and elegant work in perfect harmony with the built environment.
The inclined arches have been built from the high strength steel S460 in thicknesses of 16 to 80 mm, delivered by Dillinger.
