Dillinger heavy plate for the
double crossing of the Saint-Lazare (Paris) railway lines
“Urban sewing”
The aim of the two new bridges planned and built in parallel was to better connect the Paris districts of Saussure and Clichy-Batignolles. Only a few meters away from each other, they span the tracks of the impressive railway line at Saint-Lazare station as pedestrian (120 m long by 8.80 m wide and 426 t in weight) and road bridge (120 m long by 17.50 m wide and weighing 1,461 t). Thanks to their fine and elegant undulating lines, without any main structure above the deck, they blend seamlessly into the urban and architectural environment. They thus continue the long tradition of outstanding Paris bridges.
Simple but sophisticated technical and architectural solutions
The spatial, temporal, logistical, functional and technical restrictions associated with the location (confined urban location, planning of rail traffic, avoiding damage to the surroundings as far as possible, neighboring building sites) inspired and conditioned the non-uniform geometric form of the two bridges. Consisting both of a metal deck with a composite plate supported by V-shaped metal piles with variable inclination and spacing, they give the impression of eternal movement. The rhythm of the structure is thus given by the faceted geometry of the piles and longitudinal members and the filling between the supports, which are made of solid steel plates in the lower part and of a hole pattern in the upper part.
For this double crossing, Dillinger supplied ~ 1,900 t of heavy plate in grades S460M, S460ML, S355K2+N and S355N in thicknesses from 6 to 80 mm.
