Haliç metro bridge

The Haliç bridge enables the extension of the M2 metro line beyond the Yenikapi terminus to Taksim Square, thus connecting the two parts of the European side of the city. It marks the latest step in a plan to expand railway transportation in Turkey’s largest city. The two new railway lines increase the transport capacity from 200,000 to around 750,000 passengers per day and offer an attractive alternative to car travel. Thus, they alleviate the traffic congestion and make a major contribution to reducing environmental pollution in the city.

A particular design feature of the 919 m long Haliç bridge is the interaction of various building structures. It consists of two access viaducts (169 and 241 m long), a steel cable bridge and a 122 m long swing bridge, rotating 90° around a vertical axis, to allow larger maritime traffic to pass through.

The 387 m long and 28.65 m wide cable stayed bridge comprises two 90 m long side spans and a 180 m long central span. It is carried by two 65 m high pylons and 176 stay cables. The most unusual design feature is the presence of a subway station in the middle of the bridge. Two 4.4 m wide pedestrian walkways are suspended underneath the box girder on both sides, giving access to the station platforms and facilitating the pedestrian transfer between the two sides of Golden Horn.

For this unusual and elegant structure work Dillinger delivered 14,540 t heavy plates (ASTM A36, ASTM A572-50, ASTM A709-345W, ASTM A709-HPS485W, S460NL, S690QL) in thicknesses of 20 to 150 mm.
