Dillinger heavy plate for the
Mecca Royal Clock Tower Hotel
Dillinger steel at great heights
Upon attaining its ultimate height in July 2011, this skyscraper in the centre of the Islamic world’s most important pilgrimage destination immediately became the second tallest building on Earth. It provides the signature element for the Abraj Al-Bait building complex, which has a floor area of more than 1 million m2 and will accommodate the many thousands of Muslim pilgrims who visit Mecca’s mosque and other holy places. The architecture of the main tower is reminiscent of London’s Big Ben, and is crowned by a gigantic crescent mounted at its apex. The world’s largest clock, with hands 22 m in length and separate mechanisms for each of the four faces orientated toward the cardinal points of the compass, has been installed in the tower. Dillinger Hütte supplied 1,500 t of heavy plate in thicknesses up to 80 mm and consisting, in particular, of a high-tensile thermomechanically rolled structural steel, for the tower’s support structure and the crescent-tipped spire.
