Dillinger heavy plate for the
new A45 bridges in Germany
Dillinger steel chosen to maintain an efficient road connection between the Ruhr and the Rhine-Main areas
The German A45 motorway connects two of Europe’s most important metropolitan regions, the Rhine/Ruhr and the Frankfurt/Main areas. On the border between Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia, at the Haiger/Burbach and Wilnsdorf junctions, the B54 federal highway spans this motorway twice. At the end of 2017, a structural diagnosis revealed a “deficit in the load-bearing capacity” of the two in-place concrete bridges, mainly due to snow-clearance salt. They had to be then closed and finally demolished in early 2018. As replacement steel bridges were the consequent choice.
Innovative way of construction
omething never seen before in Germany: half a motorway had been closed and transformed for months into a huge assembly shop. Thus, the elements of the two truss girder superstructures (2,900 t and 98 m long for one and 3,600 t and 117 m long for the other) were fully assembled, welded and painted at the motorway edge. Once assembled, these superstructures received their pavement and railings. Indeed, the project manager’s objective was to carry out as many work steps as possible before lifting the bridge decks. Fully pre-assembled, they were then moved onto the A45 motorway, which was occasionally closed for 50 hours, and installed in their final position over a weekend in July 2019. This choice of carrying out the assembly out of traffic was made in particular for reasons of road safety and safety at work.
For these easy-to-maintain structures, due to the absence of intermediate piles, Dillinger supplied more than 2,300 t of heavy plate in the quality S355J2+N in thicknesses of 12 to 120 mm.
