Dillinger heavy plate for the
Norwegian Farris Bridge

In several aspects challenging

The 570 m long and 28 m wide cable-stayed bridge is part of the new section of the Norwegian E18, four-lane motorway between Bommestad and Sky near Larvik. Farris Bru, as it is called in Norway, stands out right away not only through its appealing design as a long horizontal curve passing around and over Lake Farris but also through its two 75 m high “V”-form pylons, on which the 120 m long stay-cabled main steel span is hung.

Technical and logistical challenges

During construction, one of the main challenges to face was the drilling of the 2 m diameter piles down to 83 m depth in the bedrock, an operation that had never been executed before in Norway. Besides that, the foundation of the bridge was at the time the biggest foundation ever built in a single casting on land in Norway, which required not only technical but also perfect logistical planning to ensure the safety of the construction and to keep the schedule.
Additionally, an important presetting for the project was securing the railway line for the period of construction of the bridge.

Ecological challenge

As the bridge stretches very close to the Farris drinking water reservoir, there were also a number of environmental challenges to overcome.

For this spectacular bridge, Dillinger supplied 1,130 t heavy plates in the grades S355N, S460N and S460NL, partially with special requirements on cold formability.
