Dillinger heavy plate for the
Sundsvall Bridge in Sweden

New opportunities

As part of the extension project of the European highway E4 the impressive bridge (23,000 t, 1,420 m long and 33 m high) opens up new opportunities for the development of the Sundsvall area and indeed, the entire country. Crossing the Sundsvall Fjord it creates a direct connection between Myre and Skönsberg and sustains in this way the opening up of the East coast. It also proposes a positive solution for the traffic safety, accessibility and the air environment.

Architectural masterpiece

Its special appearance due to its double sweeping curves – in both the horizontal and the vertical directions – lends the bridge its unmistakable and elegant character, in perfect harmony with the hilly surrounding landscape. The steel superstructure, despite its overall greater weight, seems to hover above the pier heads.

Engineering Prize of the German Steel 2015

The spectacular construction work convinced the prize jury not only because of its exceptional and sweeping appearance but also because of its ambitious production, assembly and logistics concept. Due to the very cold and long winters in Sweden, it was imperative to stick to a very tight construction time schedule and to erect the steel bridge just within one summer period. The bridge assembly in 40 m height over the fjord was also very challenging.
