Dillinger heavy plate for the
Warsaw’s national stadium
Dillinger steel plays a vital supporting role
Steel from Dillingen literally played a vital supporting role at the opening match of the 14th European soccer championship in Warsaw’s new national stadium on June 8 2012: Dillinger Hütte supplied around 900 tonnes of steel for the load-bearing structure of this gigantic, ultra-modern sports facility, fulfilling orders placed by the internationally known Gerkan, Marg and Partner and Schlaich, Bergermann and Partner firms of architects.
The material took the form of thermomechanically rolled heavy plate in thicknesses of up to 110 mm and assures the necessary stability in the support structure, consisting of tubular columns of 32 m length. The newly completed sports complex, with seating for 58,500 spectators, was constructed specially for this year’s European soccer championship and is the largest venue hosting games in this tournament. The overall facility, occupying a total area of 18 hectares, replaces Warsaw’s old 1954 stadium, and will in future also include an indoor athletics arena seating 20,000, and an aquatic events centre of 4,500 capacity.
