Heavy plate for the
Stuttgart exhibition center car park
The car park that’s really a bridge
The multi-storey car park at Stuttgart’s new exhibition center is one of Germany’s largest, and also one of its most unusual. It is, in fact, really a bridge, crossing, without external support for more than 100 meters of its length, an intensively used autobahn. All of this is made possible by two steel lattice girders of 440 meters in length and 24 meters width, carrying the weight of six vehicle decks. Conventional scaffolding-based construction would have necessitated temporary closure of the autobahn and the diversion of 120,000 vehicles daily.
This was not an option, so it was decided to pursue the bridge concept consistently in the construction method, too, employing the place-and-thrust method with no interruption to traffic, a procedure totally unprecedented for a structure of this size. Dillinger Hütte supplied the steel for the girders with the very maximum of efficiency, in the form of five segments, fully prepared for welding, for each girder.
