Heavy plate from Dillinger Hütte for
the Samuel Beckett Bridge in Dublin
A marvel of modern engineering
The bridge named after the famous Irish writer Samuel Beckett represents a real attraction. Its shape gives the appearance of a harp lying on its side, a historical and prominent symbol of Ireland. The Samuel Beckett Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the River Liffey linking the north side with the south side of the city in the Dublin Docklands. It is 120 m long and 48 m high. It can rotate by an angle of 90° to allow ships to pass through. The main structure, weighing 5,000 t, is supported by 31 cable stays. It has four traffic lanes (two running north and two running south), cycle paths and foot paths on either side.
Since its opening in December 2009, the Samuel Beckett Bridge has become an icon of Dublin’s landmarks. For the realization of this marvel of modern engineering Dillinger Hütte supplied 760 t of structural steel, including thermo-mechanically rolled DI-MC 355 fine grained structural steel in thicknesses up to 120 mm for the base of the pylon and high tensile DILLIMAX 690T water quenched and tempered fine grained structural steel in a plate thickness of 180 mm for the cap of the pylon.
